"To Restore America, Start with Honor"
My abiding patriotism struggled, yesterday, with my deep disappointment in the American politicians and institutions of the moment. I began my day by re-reading the Declaration of Independence, as I do every year (and boy, are the charges against King George III germane just now!). I gathered with friends and family to celebrate the Fourth of July. I wore my current favorite t-shirt, which reads, "I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States," a phrase from the oath of office taken by public officials. And despite being a private citizen, I will!
But all that high-mindedness and idealism was tinged with sadness at our present state.
This morning I read an exceptional article by Anne-Marie Slaughter, author of The Idea that Is America. In it, she clearly articulates a guiding principle of this blog, and what I mean to do with it: to lay out an argument for ethical and moral responses to the very real challenges facing my country and the world.
I loved it. It fuels me for the long fight. It convinces me of the justice and importance of that fight. I hope that it brings some of you that same comfort and rekindles in you the light that casts out darkness.
Do it soon; the link is to a gift article from my personal Bloomberg subscription, and will evaporate in seven days.
